#HATitude® 101: Custom Hat Guide

“I’d like a custom hat, but I don’t know where to start!”

This should be our ad in the yellow pages. We hear this statement a lot.

Maybe you’re a fan of the tried and true, simple design of cowboy hats’ past. Ah, you’re a traditionalist, we love to see it.

If you’re looking for something a little more out of the hatbox, whether that’s a wild color, big feather, custom embroidery, or even custom painting, you may find yourself saying, “But where do I start?”

It doesn’t take years in the biz to design a hat, all it takes is imagination.

Have you ever seen a painting that was so striking, you had to take it home? Or maybe there’s a photograph or shirt you love the colors in so much, it’s the first thing you would grab if there was a fire in your house. Start there!

Does it have yellows and blues on a white background? Does it have lots of dark shadows?

Maybe the brighter orange and yellows of the painting really catch your eye. Well, maybe the yellow and orange are too bright. Actually, maybe it’s more of a sunrise gold you’re seeing in the painting.

Now imagine this hat in your mind. Now, how would a Black or Gunmetal Grey hat look with a warm gold hat band or ribbon? Does it have an extra long feather pheasant feather? Or maybe a couple of short ones grouped together. Maybe it doesn’t have a feather at all, but a silver concho!

Whatever you’re picturing in your mind is a custom hat! You’ve done it!

A few things to think about when designing a custom hat:

  1. What colors do you wear a lot? What colors repeat in your wardrobe? If you wear a lot of black, maybe you choose a neutral color like Gunmetal Grey or Buckskin and add some black trim to compliment your existing wardrobe.
  2. What color looks good with your skin tone?
  3. What color will you wear every day? Let’s be honest, Fire Engine Red might be your favorite color, but when push comes to shove, will you wear a hat that color every day or every week? Do you have a shirt or outfit in mind (that you already own) that would be complemented by that red hat?

Now, having said that, we’ve made plenty of red hats that were to die for. And a lot of people can rock red like it’s their job. Here at Greeley Hat Works, your #HATisfaction® is our first priority.

Lucky for you when you’re ready to design your custom hat, we’ve got Owner Trent Johnson and Sales Manager Timm Costello here to help you get it just right.
